Women were still maintaining household chores and labor. Women were spinning wool, sewing and cleaning clothes, fed and killed the farm animals, milked cows, and did many other chores. However, their most labor-intense chore was child birth. The average women gave birth to five to eight children, but many of them unfortunately died. However, their work would soon be respected because of the boycotts of British goods. Domestic chores such as spinning wool were seen as patriotic because it boycotted the British goods. This had been a milestone for women’s role. They would be a part of the resistance movement for the first time in American history. They had been praised for their work and an editor for the Boston Evening Post wrote, “The industry and frugality of American ladies are contributing to bring about the political salvation of a whole continent”.
During the war women would also accompany the men into battle. They would serve as cooks, nurses, food foragers, water carriers, prostitutes, and provide company for some of their husbands. Although they weren’t allowed to fight, they were being as helpful as they could at the time. They were also acted as motivators for the soldiers as many would lose their will to fight in the war had their wives or girlfriends not been there. However, back at home women had to assume a much more independent role taking over the farms and businesses alone. It had given women the chance to prove their ability to act independent rather than relying on their husbands during the war when acting alone.
